A L’Amour is heading to New York Bridal Market

If you are a bride to be or are just  follow the bridal blogs, beginning this weekend, you will be inundated with news about  ”Bridal Market.”  There will be tweets from Martha, blogs from The Knot, and images posted on Facebook.

What exactly is Bridal Market?  Essentially it is fashion week for the bridal world– four non-stop days of appointments all over the city.

Many designers show their collections in their own showrooms on 7th Avenue,  otherwise know as the Garment District or Fashion Center.  Many designers, not based in New York,  show their collections in various hotels all over the city.  They often take over entire hotel suites.

Romona Keveza shows her collection at the St. Regis hotel on the East side.  Swoon!

What a location –an entire suite  filled with flowers creating the perfect backdrop for her fabulous collections.

Then there are the fashion shows.  What a great way to experience a collection.  There is quite a bit of pomp & circumstance, but a runway show is a great way to evoke the feeling of a collection.  From the music played as the models go down the runway to how their hair and makeup is styled, you immediately get the “vibe” of the latest styles.  You gain an understanding of what prompts the creativity in the collection.

So what happens after the fashion shows?  We generally have informal meetings with the designers (a writing appointment),  so that we have an up close and personal look at the gowns.  It is then that we choose our favorites!

We have to consider what trends are emerging in bridal, what our brides have been asking for, what we have in the store, and what we are missing.  SO many things going through our heads at all times!

Sound fun?  Absolutely! Seem easy?  Think again!
We will see hundreds and hundreds of wedding gowns and will have to pick and choose among them, deciding what gowns the brides who walk into A L’ Amour will want to see!

Compound the choices of “white dresses“, with the collections of accessories, headpieces, veils, shoes, jewelry, social occasion dresses for Mothers and Guests, the newest trends for bridesmaids and Prom and you can imagine how our heads spin by the end of the day.

So follow along with us through market and let us know what you’re loving, liking, your most favorite dresses, your least favorite dresses and everything in between!

White by Vera Wang has touches of color for David’s Bridal

I’ve been sitting on this from Vera Wang for over a week until bridal market began and I tell you, I was just about to burst.

You all know that Vera Wang partnered with David’s Bridal and this (in my opinion) is so “Vera” but at an affordable price. This “White by Vera Wang Spring 2012 collection” will allow more brides to transform their wedding dreams into reality and make their day even more special.

The tulle ball gown with Chantilly lace at the bodice, basque waist and cathedral train is as light as air. Think Kim Kardashian wedding dress…because that’s what it looks like!  The one-shoulder basket-weave organza gown with a drop waist and organza petals looks so soft and you will simply float down the aisle.  I’m one for color and love that there are two in the collection that are in pink or blush.

Her bridesmaids for David’s Bridal are simply wearable.  In colors like Amethyst, Blush, Charcoal, Ebony, Midnight, Moss, Orchid, Champagne and Willow will look beautiful both at the wedding and for any event after. There is also a selection of shoes, and hair accessories, so you can truly be Vera from the top of your head, to the soles of your feet.

This collection will be carried in all 250 David’s Bridal stores in the US and their five Canadian locations.  Bridesmaid gowns range from 0-26 and bridal sizes range from 0-14 but there are some select styles that are available up to a size 26.

Every bridal gown in this collection is no more than $1,500 and for your girls, nothing more than $200.  I’m so glad that I can finally share this collection with you.  If you want to see more from this collection, visit www.davidsbridal.com

In a few days, I hope to share the Vera Couture Collection with you.

Happy Bridal Market!

Looking For a Reason

The reason is there in Aaron’s eyes. You can see it, too, if you look past the half moons like bruises against his jaundiced skin, past the watery sheen and dilated pupils of an addict. If you set aside prejudice and righteousness, suspend judgment, block out political arguments, you can see the same thing I do. A reason to care.

When I look into Aaron’s eyes I see him at five-years-old, eight maybe, ten, sitting in the front pew at church listening to his father preach. He would probably wear a white shirt, stiff collar slightly crooked, poking him in the ear. He is fidgety, as usual, drawing curlicues of blue ink snowballs in the margins of the bulletin with a pen from his mother’s purse, the ballpoint rough against the textured hard cover of the hymn book.

I don’t know how Aaron grew from that boy into the young man he is today, ball cap low over his eyes, strands of dark hair escaping from the rubber band at the nape of his neck. His hands are shoved deep into his pockets because we have no gloves on the Night Ministry bus tonight. The snow has turned to dirty slush; the leather of his shoes have soaked it in, dust and salt and cinders mottle the toes, make white uneven marks along the heel.

I wonder what circumstances, what choices, led him to this corner of Chicago, selling his self respect for a short respite from reality. What little piece is missing, what part of his life went wrong that the ten year old boy drawing snowballs became a young adult shooting heroin? Unhealthy relationships? Child abuse? Problems at school? A reckless joyride that went out of control? Did his addiction start out slowly? Peer pressure. Pot. Drop some acid here, score some coke there. Pierce the vein and watch the poison pollute the blood flow. Oblivion.

I can tell you what I do know. His father is a minister and his mom teaches Sunday school. Last summer, his cousin got married. Someone in his family picked him up, got him a tux to wear, drove him to the wedding and reception, and brought him back when the festivities finished. No mention of how they contacted him to tell him the wedding plans, or their apparent willingness to return the homeless Aaron to the street corner to buy more dope.

He trusts women more than men and doesn’t have a lot to say. His first visits to the bus were tentative: on and off again without making eye contact. Toothpaste, soap, a session with the nurse. Constantly watchful of the space around him. Now, if he stays long enough to sit down, he often drifts in and out, head nodding with fatigue and dope drowsiness.

One night he asked for clean socks. He’d just been in the hospital with hepatitis and had a cut on his foot that the nurse treated. We had no socks. The next day, I bought a package of thick, bright white stockings with gray toes and heels. The kind my sons like to wear. Since Aaron didn’t come to the bus the next time I worked, I gave the socks to the night minister for the Lakeview neighborhood and asked him to give them to Aaron when he saw the boy.

A Saturday or two later, I was making coffee inside the bus when Aaron came on board with another young man. He thanked me for the socks. His health was improving. He introduced me to the youth who’d come in with him. “This is my friend,” he told the boy, leaning a little to tap my shoulder with his. “Yeah,” I agreed, touching shoulders again. “Good friends.”

Maybe the question I need to answer is not what went wrong, but what might go wrong. How long before the young boy’s eyes in the young man’s face grow cold? Will the day come when he will look at me with a glazed gaze: wild, cruel, daring someone for a reason to vent his anger and frustration at what he has become? He will sit on our stained blue couch and I will mix hot cocoa for him, or maybe pour coffee, extra cream and extra sugar. He will stuff packages of cookies in his pockets and ask if we have any clean socks, any hygiene kits, any sandwiches, any more coffee. Anything? The dark hair will be streaked with gray, the zipper on his coat will not quite close and he will carry a plastic shopping bag with the corner of a frayed airline blanket poking out from its tightly packed interior.

If this is Aaron’s future, will I find courage enough then to look past his rage to find the human being inside? Will there be one there? Which would be the worst case scenario: a cardboard box or a coffin?

A cardboard box, and then a coffin?

No, I think. The worst case scenario would be not looking for the human being. If I stop looking, if everyone stops looking, the human being dies while the body continues to breathe. And the little boy in the church pew, the face he makes as he tugs at his tight top shirt button, the wide-eyed dream of someday drawing comic books, or pitching for the Yankees, or winning the Indy 500, dies also.

A story about heels

I LOVE SHOES.

That is probably no surprise since I’m a girl. But it has to be said. I love buying them. I love wearing them.

I was organizing my closet this morning; and I got curious about my shoes… I counted how many I currently own, not including house slippers. The magic number is 23 pairs. This covers all my sneakers, heels, boots, flip flops, flats and sandals.

Exhibit A. My Collection of Footwear

Women in America own, on average, 19 pairs of shoes. My number is only a few pairs over that; so it’s not too bad, right? After all, if you look closely at my collection, most of them are worn out and old. I haven’t bought a pair in months. The newest one I own (Vans shoes)… I won at a raffle. Still, this collection is made up of purchases in the past four years that I’ve been earning my own money. I’ve also given away a couple of pairs within that span of time. Who knows how many I’ll own in another four years. I’ll get back to you on that.

Most of the shoes I buy are appropriate for my job: comfortable, without heels, low maintenance. This pretty much covers 75% of my collection (Exhibit A, 2nd row to last row). Chucks are my favorite, followed by Fit Flops, followed by some splurging here and there (Adidas Originals and Onitsuka Tiger).

The shoes across the top of my collection (Exhibit A, 1st row) are for formal events, parties and special occasions. I only bought these over the past two and a half years. I didn’t like going to formal events; and that pretty much buried the need to purchase girly shoes such as heels or style items such as boots. I may have owned some heels in the past… for prom or for my sister’s or my brother’s wedding; but if I could get away with wearing ballet flats instead of heels, I’d grab that opportunity. That’s not the case anymore.

The first pair of heels that were truly mine (I chose it. I paid for it.) are Steve Madden (Exhibit A, 1st row, middle). It was cute. It was not that high. It was easy to pair with simple semi-formal outfits. It was safe.

The second pair I bought changed things. I walked into a Nine West boutique at Gateway Mall and saw a display of shoes on sale. I was thinking of buying boots for a while; and this one caught my eye (Exhibit A, 1st row, 2nd column). However, it was HIGH… four to five inches high. I was reluctant; but my sister pushed me to try it anyway. The moment I wore those heels and stood up. I couldn’t speak. It looked great. It didn’t matter that I may have to practice walking with them at home for the next few months before actually wearing them to an event. I had to buy it. That’s when I learned the power of heels and its effect on the female form. No wonder women go crazy over them.

Given what I do, it’s pretty obvious why I go for comfort when it comes to footwear; but since making that realization a few years back, I guess having a couple of shiny happy heels and boots don’t hurt (that much). Tiis ganda na lang. (Endure suffering for beauty.)

Fall Regattas:Sailing Boots

The Fall calendar is loaded with sailing regattas around the NYC / Long Island Sound. Since I have to stock up, I thought it would be great to do a series of posts featuring foul-weather gear that looks great and performs.

Sperry Women's Ventus Boot

No Fall season would be complete without a boot to covet. So, I’m kicking off the week with the Ventus boot by Sperry Top-Sider, a company that is synonymous with the boat shoe. The nubuck waterproof upper sports gladiator-like shin guards – great for darting around on deck. It also features a lightweight midsole with Sperry’s signature Wave-Siping™ grip for wet or dry traction. Available in both men’s and women’s styles.

Hello Mister,

21oz Unsanforized Indigo Fabric, Red Line Selvedge

The Fabric Selection

Peek a Boo Coinpocket

Straight Cut

I thought Batik cloth bag is lame, but since we using 21oz Japanese fabric and sewed by Yu-san I think that will be great so,

Batik Cloth, Traditional Indonesian Fabric

Before i would like to combine Batik cloth with Biingata (i don’t know how to spell it right) which is traditional Okinawa fabric, but it take more time to make so I decided to make only batik cloth.

(you can see Biingata fabric in the video later) Because Yu-san is going to send it to my hostel in Tokyo.

After Selecting fabric and details, we are talking about the cut and thread color, I am choosing the color of lime and orange, and for the inseam and hemming I am choosing navy blue.

Clothes I can’t afford

I went shopping – which I totally can not afford. But it’s like work clothes so I guess that makes it a little bit okay. Didn’t have enough work clothes for the 2 days training next week and at least now I do.

It was good shopping though. I got some cheap pantihose which I always like buying because the size chart on the back makes me feel ~skinnez~ lol. They go by height and weight and well at my height I’d need to put on 10kg/22lbs to be included in their little shaded sizing circles. Ha, as if.

But I also got a skirt that fits and has a cute little bow, and a shirt (which was a total mission at the moment because I need long sleeved and we’re heading into summer). Not a huge fan of the shirt, I’m too oddly proportioned for shirts to really fit properly anymore. The last one I bought fits in the arms and waist but is too small for my…. chest. The one today fits my chest but looks baggy in the arms. Stupid boobs complicating everything. Not that it would have made a difference today as the shirt I found was the last in it’s style but whatever.

Fucking 48.6kg this morning. Walked to the shops, 120, but 3 hours too late. And didn’t walk home. Lazy fuck. Mini binge on 200g chocolate and 3 weet-bix with milk. At least it was (just) after 4. Had to dig into savings for the work clothes. Now my savings is all of 100 dollars and I only have 10 on my card. And I don’t get govt money for like 8 days. And I have to put more money on my public transport card or I wont be able to afford to get to the training. And… of course… I need to FUCKING BINGE. I am also out of laxatives. Again. Which is depressing because a bought a 100pack a week ago. Man if I don’t get this job I’ll be shoplifting in 2 weeks time.

Stress stress stress. God this binging/purging/laxatives thing costs me a fucking fortune.

The Nude Shoe

What is a “Nude Shoe”?
Technically, a nude shoe is any shoe that matches the color of your skin tone. With the variety of skin tones the people of the world possess, this involves many colors from light beige to dark brown. In the end, it doesn’t matter what color you pick, as long as it matches you skin tone well. However, most manufacturers seem to have other ideas on what nude shoes should look like. You’ll notice many pairs revolve around a few colors.

The difference between a nude shoe and a lightly toned shoe:
You’re probably asking yourself, what’s the difference between a person that buys nude shoes and a person that buys cream or pale brown shoes? The difference is simple. Women that purchase nude shoes want it to blend in with their skin tone. Women that purchase beige shoes simply like beige shoes and aren’t interested in matching it their skin tone. If by some chance they like beige shoes because it matches their skin tone, they’re really just buying a pair of nude shoes regardless of its color. Again, a nude shoes is any shoe that blends in well with your skin tone.

Their Purpose:
What are the benefits of nude shoes? There are two main benefits. First, it makes you seem taller than you actually are. Second, they are great for highlighting whatever you’re wearing. But let’s examine how they can make you look taller. By blending in well with your skin tone, the eye has a hard time discerning the difference between skin and shoe (Especially from a distance). As such, our eyes see a long unbroken line from the point where your skirt or dress ends to the bottom of the shoe. For all intents and purposes, it ends up looking like part of our leg. This is how the illusion is created. However, this added height isn’t really apparent in nude flats, pumps or trainers for obvious reasons. They do however work very well with high heels, platforms and thick wedges. For this reason, most people go with high heel courts/platforms/wedges/ankle boots and other varieties that give you a physical height bonus on top of the illusion.

Some Basic Rules:
Choose the right color. It will make the difference between making or breaking the illusion. Avoid complicated shoes with all sorts of bells and whistles adorning it. You want them to blend in, not stick out. For that reason, avoid all shoe/ankle accessories. We need to deter viewers from focusing on our feet and direct their attention elsewhere. Looking to highlight a great dress, top, cardigan or mini-skirt? These are perfect for the job. While there are many varieties on the market, I feel high heel court shoes perform the job admirably. Court shoes (pumps in North America) are simple, straightforward and sexy footwear to go with. The basic court shoe is low cut with rounded or pointed tips, lacking platforms or any need for straps or buckles. They are the epitome of simplistic beauty and they are my personal choice when shopping for nude shoes. Simple, elegant and sexy (on or off the foot), they should be your first choice if you are unsure what to go with.
